General Information

Course Goal
Our Sun Desktop Maintenance Course will prepare students to operate, configure and maintain Sun desktop systems and peripherals. In this course, students will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to work with the Solaris operating system, configure Sun desktop systems, troubleshoot faulty desktop systems and components to the FRU, leverage Internet and Multimedia resources, and use device replacement to restore desktop systems to proper functioning order. This course is intended for field service and support personnel.

This course uses active learning to involve the students in their classroom learning and to develop practices that will encourage continuous self-learning. Students will meet the course objectives through interactive classroom discussion, focused hands-on lab exercises, self-guided research, and scenario-based troubleshooting. Classes will have extensive use of the On-Line! Detective for Sun.


Course Prerequisites
Knowledge of computer hardware/software components and experience troubleshooting computer systems is required.


Course Scope
The course includes the following products:

  • Solaris 2.5.1, 2.6, 2.7 (Solaris 7), 2.8 (Solaris 8)
  • UltraSPARC 1, 2, 5, 10, 30, 60, 80
  • SPARCstation 4, 5, 10, 20
  • "Lunchbox" and Uni-pac peripheral enclosures

  • Course Content
    Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Identify Sun desktop computers and their peripherals, and research new models
  • Differentiate major system busses: SBus, Mbus, UPA, SCSI and PCI
  • Execute OBP and NVRAM commands
  • Analyze system boot sequence and identify boot sequence errors
  • Understand and utilize basic troubleshooting techniques
  • Select, use and interpret appropriate diagnostic tools: OBP/UNIX commands, Serial terminal & VTS
  • IIsolate system faults to the FRU
  • Research component part numbers and replace faulty FRUs
  • Format and partition a disk drive
  • Install Solaris Operating System

  • Course Length
    Sun Desktop Maintenance is 5 days. Class size is limited to 10 students.
